The Runner's Guide Clubs and Other Organizations

Please note this is a work in progress, and you can help!!

Kauai

Oahu
The largest of the Hawaii running clubs is the Mid-Pacific Road Runner's Club (MPRRC) on the island of Oahu. They have been a strong force in the local running community for over 30 years. Associated with the Road Runner's Clubs of America (RRCA), they host or support some of the best events on Oahu. To find out more about MPRRC, call their hotline at (808) 295-MPRRC.

If you like to run "off-road," drink beer, and hang out with people with names like Thighmaster, Tuna Melt, and Teeny Weenie, then you should contact one of the Hash House Harrier groups on Oahu. Conceived by a group of British ex-patriots in 1938, they took a child's game of chasing a "hare" down a trail and turned it into the ultimate adult fun-run. The "hare" begins the hash by blazing a trail, which he or she marks with chalk or bread flour. Several minutes later the "harriers" follow the clues down the trail, with the goal of catching the hare. Whether they catch the hare or not, the trail ends with copious amounts of beer, soda, and food. Traditional songs are sung, and a good time is had by all. If this sounds like fun then you should contact the two primary groups on Oahu. The Honolulu Hawaii Hash House Harriers meet every Tuesday evening. The Aloha Hash House Harriers run on Saturday afternoons. There are a few other groups as well. The number for all Hawaii hashes (Honolulu H4, Aloha H3, Oahu Pickup H3, and Hawaii Full Moon H3) is 948-HASH.

The longest operating running-related store on Oahu is the Running Room in Honolulu. They have been in business in the same neighborhood for over 20 years. They can provide information on local routes and upcoming races, as well as provide you with a great selection of running-related merchandise. They can be reached at (808) 737-2422.

Another great running-related store is the Runner's Route Limited at Ward Warehouse. Like the Running Room, they carry a great selection of running gear, and can provide information on local running routes or events. They can be reached at (808) 591-9155.

Molokai and Lanai

Maui
The Valley Isle Road Runner's Association is the premier running club for the island of Maui. They sponsor several great races every year, including the Maui Marathon. They can be contacted at (808) 871-6441.

Maui has one very unique event, the Run to the Sun, which takes participants from sea-level to over 10,000 feet. If the hills don't get you, the distance will. Run to the Sun is the longest running ultra in the United States, having been run for over XX years. It usually takes place in September, and is sponsored by H.U.R.T. (Hawaii Ultra Running Team). For more information contact H.U.R.T. at (808) xxx-xxxx. Note: Due to the expense associated with running an organized event in a national park and the lack of runners strong (or brave) enough to attempt this great run, the Run to the Sun is in danger of ceasing to exist. Please call H.U.R.T. for more information, or to see how you can help.

The Big Island
The Big Island Road Runner's Club can be contacted at (808) 935-7358.

The Road Runners Club of America has a list of Hawaii Clubs too.
