Description
The Kahala runs are very popular, most likely due to their inclusion in the Honolulu Marathon route.
Despite the traffic and lack of exciting scenery, you will never be alone running along Kalanianaole
Hwy. This run can also be combined with the Diamond Head run, and even with the Ala Moana/Magic Island
run for a run very similar to the official Honolulu Marathon course.
Distance
The short version of the Kahala run is approximately 4 miles. Venturing onto and down Kalanianaole Hwy.
and into Hawaii Kai makes this run any distance up to 16 miles.
Environment
Mostly flat, paved surface. Some sidewalks. Water is available at Fort Ruger (Triangle) Park. Water
and restrooms are available at Wailupe Beach Park (along Kalanianaole Hwy.)
To Get There From Honolulu
This run starts from Fort Ruger (Triangle) Park along Diamond Head Rd. To get to the park, proceed
east, through Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue. Just past Kapiolani Park, turn right onto Diamond Head Rd.
Follow Diamond Head until you see the park on the left, just before the road turns into Kahala Avenue.
Street parking is available in the vicinity of the park.
Suggested Route
From the lower end of the park, proceed east along Kahala Avenue. After approximately 1.5 miles of
running, turn left onto Kealaolu Ave. Water is available at the service station just before going
under H-1 (Luinalilo Freeway). Turn around here and retrace your steps for a 4-mile run. For longer
distance, follow the "ramp" across from the service station onto Kalanianaole Hwy. Continue east.
Water and restrooms are available at Wailupe Park (about 1.5 miles down Kalanianaole Hwy). For a total
of 11 miles, turn around once you get to Hawaii Kai Dr., and retrace your steps. For longer distance
continue east, past Hawaii Kai Dr. Turn left onto Lunalilo Home Rd. Turn left onto Wailua Rd. Follow
to Hawaii Kai Dr. Follow Hawaii Kai Dr. back to Kalanianaole Hwy. Turn right, and proceed back to the
start. Be sure to stop at Wailupe Park and/or the service station for water. The total length of this
run is approximately 16 miles.
