The Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Runs

In late July, the Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Marathon allows runners to frolic about the world's most active volcano. Its promoters call this event "the world's toughest measured marathon." Those who have run it tend to agree. After a brief couple of miles on paved road, this marathon takes its runners through 13 miles of the barren, lava encrusted, Ka'u Desert. From there it is mostly uphill to the finish line. Don't shy away from this one, for it is truly a local favorite. The promoters also host a 5 and 10 mile run and a 5 mile walk so this event can be enjoyed by the entire family. For more information contact the race directors at (808) 982-7783.

The Kona Marathon

The last of the Hawaii marathons is the Kona Marathon in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Run every August, this run covers the same course as the Ironman Triathlon run leg along the shoreline of the beautiful Kona coast. This event also offers runs for the entire family with a half-marathon, 5 and 10 kilometer runs. Contact JTL Timing Systems at (808) 325-0287 for more information on this great event.
