The Maui Marathon While the Honolulu Marathon is by far the largest, it has several smaller competitors on the islands of Maui and Hawaii. Starting in March, is the Maui Marathon. Called the "Run with the Whales," the Maui Marathon takes runners from the Kahului area along the scenic coastline through the world-famous town of Lahaina to the resort area of Kaanapali. Run during peak whale-watching season, this event offers participants breathtaking views of the Maui coastline and you are sure to see a few whales along the way. Runner's World magazine listed the Maui Marathon as one of the top ten scenic marathons in the United States. This is a favorite for many Hawaii marathoners.
