The Runner's Guide Racing Scene

Please note this is a work in progress, and you can help!!

Hawaii is a great place for anyone who loves participating in organized running events. In 1996, Hawaii hosted over 140 running and walking events for a total of more than 1500 organized miles. Ranging from an elite one-mile run in Waikiki to a 100-mile ultramarathon on the Big Island, these races are enjoyed by many thousands of visitors and residents each year. And this is just the running/walking events. Hawaii is home to a large number of multisport events as well, the most popular being the Ironman Triathlon on the Big Island.

Hawaii has five official marathons: the Maui Marathon (March), the Kilauea Volcano Marathon (July), the Kona Marathon (August), the Big Island International Marathon (October), and last but not least, the Honolulu Marathon (December). A great source for information on the marathons is The Ultimate Guide to Marathons by Dennis Craythorn and Rich Hanna.

There are several ways to find out about upcoming events. There is a publication called Hawaii Race that contains schedule information, and the Department of Parks and Recreation along with the Honolulu Marathon Association publish an annual calendar. These publications are available at most running-related sporting goods stores. Another great way to find out about local races is to call a few running stores.

The Mid-Pacific Road Runner's Club has a hotline, (808) 295-MPRRC, that gives the status of their upcoming runs.

JTL Timing Systems has a web site that contains a thorough schedule of events as well as results from previous events.

Like everything else, old runs fade away and new ones appear in their place. These schedules and hotlines attempt to provide the most current information available, but if you are planning to run one of these events it is a good idea to contact someone of authority first for up-to-date information.
